The ME/CFS Puzzle

We've all assembled a puzzle at some point in our lives. They were pretty easy when we were little -- six or eight pieces, and usually a simple picture of a dog or cat. As we got older, our parents might have challenged us with a 25-piece or maybe even a 100-piece puzzle if we were good!

Every time we started one, we knew from the picture on the box what we were trying to assemble. We'd put together the edge pieces first, and then fill in the center. When we finished, there was always a great sense of accomplishment, wasn't there?

But have you ever tried to put together a puzzle when you didn't have a picture to go by, or a box that didn't have all the pieces?  What about trying to assemble a puzzle in a dark room?  Sounds impossible, doesn't it?

Well, while it was and is extremely difficult at times, I refuse to believe it's impossible. Yes, my health issues stemming from ME/CFS are complicated, and I'll admit that I thought I knew how to put this puzzle together. But I didn't. In hindsight, I spent way too much time focusing on individual pieces rather than seeing the big picture.

As a result, by mid-2015 I became so weak I was nearly bedridden and couldn't even wheel myself outside of my apartment on the two days each month that I needed to leave the building to get groceries. Some friends here in the building were even suggesting I should move to an assisted living facility...

And then things started getting better.
